Why Hairdressing?

I'm often asked "Did you always want to be a Hairdresser?" When answering, I almost feel bad for saying no! The truth is, no, I never imagined myself when I was a child, like some young girls did, being a hairdresser but I always knew I wanted to be creative. I just needed to find myself a career which kept this part of my personality.
So I found myself in an apprenticeship when I was 16, this way I could start earning a wage but still learn as I went. To be completely honest, when I started I had no idea what to expect and I certainly didn't love it right away! I can remember getting home after a particularly tough day, opening the front door and bursting into tears as soon as I seen my Mam. How bad is that?! Being 16 and at the beginning of your career is scary especially when all of your friends are students, have weekends off and school holidays! But now, now I'm thankful for those days, all the tears and sore feet... oh and having your name shouted 4569 times a day! Now I know that without those days, I could never have found these days! And these days have been amazing.
So if your'e a looking to get into the business of hairdressing I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship, go for a well known salon and look into the training schemes to see what they offer and always ensure it's an NVQ course, these will help with future jobs. I found myself learning more in the salon than I did in the college but that was the beauty of my career, I was pushed to learn and the people who did that didn't even realise what they were doing for me.
After I qualified I was still very eager to learn but experience is just as important, I worked on the salon floor as a stylist for a few years and then applied to do the Master Colour Program for Wella. This was huge and I was nervous, so nervous that I nearly withdrew my application. A few people who I worked with believed in me and without those I would have totally chickened out (Thanks guys).
I was accepted! I couldn't believe it, I was going to do one of the most prestigious colour courses available! Time to get my shit together (pardon my french). I was joining the colour elite! If you're reading this and you're a hairdresser interested in this course I'll link it now. https://www.wella.com/professional/en-EN/colorexpert#/?_k=qrv48u
This course for me was a total game changer, it gave me the confidence and knowledge to do so many amazing things with hair and that leads me to my question, 'Why Hairdressing?'
Hairdressing is so much more than it sounds, I don't just do hair.
The most important reason for me is that I really can make a difference, a great hair do can change the way someone is feeling. It can give confidence and make a person feel like they can take on the world!
Everyone's had a bad hair cut, and everyones had a great one. The latter is what I aim for with every client I meet.
This is why I've decided to start It's Just Hair, because what more incentive do I need ,
other than making my clients feel great! Thanks for reading, if you have any questions just leave a comment below :) Hannah, It's Just Hair X
